You find a hotel you like. You check Booking.com. It looks straightforward — a price, a photo, a few reviews. You book it.
What you probably don’t see is that the price you paid includes a commission markup of anywhere between 15% and 25%, passed on to you by the platform. The hotel didn’t set that price. The OTA did.
This post breaks down exactly what you give up when you book through an OTA — and what you gain when you book directly with us at La Quinta by Wyndham Abu Dhabi Al Wahda.
Online travel agencies — Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Agoda — are essentially resellers. They list hotel rooms, charge the hotel a commission on every booking (typically 15–25%), and in many cases, pass that cost along in the room rate shown to you.
Their value proposition to travellers is comparison shopping. You can see multiple hotels in one place, filter by price, and read aggregated reviews. That’s genuinely useful when you don’t have a hotel in mind.
But once you’ve identified the hotel you want to stay at, the OTA stops adding value — and starts adding cost.
Hotels are contractually restricted from publicly undercutting OTA rates on their own website in some markets — but they can and do offer direct-only benefits that bring the total value below what the OTA offers. Complimentary breakfast, room upgrades, early check-in, and loyalty points are common examples. None of these show up in an OTA comparison.
Wyndham Rewards points only accumulate on stays booked directly through Wyndham channels. Book through Booking.com and you earn nothing on the programme — even though you’re sleeping in the same bed. Over multiple stays, this adds up to real money.
When you book through an OTA, your reservation sits in their system. If something changes — your flight is delayed, you need a different room, you have a special request — your first call goes to the OTA, not the hotel. The hotel often has limited ability to act on OTA bookings without going through platform procedures.
When you book direct, you’re talking to the people who will actually be looking after you.
OTA cancellation policies don’t always match the hotel’s own policies. Disputes about refunds are handled by the platform, not the hotel — and the process is slower and less flexible than dealing with the property directly.
When you book on our website [LINK], here is exactly what changes:
Say you’re visiting Abu Dhabi for a few days — maybe for work, maybe for a family trip that includes a day at the mall. You search “hotels near Al Wahda Mall Abu Dhabi” and OTAs surface a list of options, some of which are 3–4 km from the mall but marketed as “nearby.”
La Quinta by Wyndham is the only hotel physically adjacent to Al Wahda Mall — you can walk directly into the mall from our lobby. That’s not a detail OTA filters surface easily, because distance calculations vary and “near” is loosely defined on most platforms.
When you book direct on our site [LINK], you get that location advantage plus the rate and service benefits above. The OTA gets you a booking. We get you a stay worth coming back for.
OTAs are useful for discovery. Once you know where you’re staying, they’re a middleman you’re paying for nothing.
Book direct at La Quinta by Wyndham Abu Dhabi Al Wahda and you get the best rate, Wyndham Rewards points, and a team that can actually take care of you from the moment you book to the moment you check out.
